Offering comprehensive exams and preventive cleanings to the Middlebury, CT area
During your hygiene visit your hygienist will perform a through cleaning to remove plaque and calculus that builds up around the crevices of teeth and gums. If left untreated this can lead to infection in the gums that can progress to gum disease. Gum disease can be recognized by bleeding gums, sensitivity to cold, drifting teeth, loose teeth and bad breath. Treatment for gum disease is a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planning to ensure any bacteria, plaque and tarter below the gums is removed to prevent the disease from progressing. An additional antibiotic treatment placed directly in the gums eliminates bacteria that cannot be reached.
Your hygienist will go over home care instructions for brushing, flossing and the best habits for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. In addition to the cleaning, a fluoride gel may be applied to teeth especially of children, young adults and adults at high risk for cavities to remineralize and strengthen enamel to prevent future cavities. Your hygienist may also take digital x-rays of your teeth to help detect cavities and gum diseases early on if present. With advances in x-ray technology, digital x-rays are able to provide high quality images at a fraction of the radiation of traditional film x-rays and radiation from our surroundings.
During your cleaning appointment you will also get a visit from the doctor who will review your health history, x-rays, perform an oral cancer screening and evaluate your jaw joints, jaw muscles, gums and teeth for health. This will also give the doctor opportunity to listen to and address any concerns you may have.
